Notes of lighter, sweet red fruit, including raspberry on the nose, followed by subtle floral and dusty hints of rose hip and red brick, as well as tart cherry pie and clay minerality. The structure and tannin come at the front and mid palate showing flavors of dried cranberry and leather, with a softer mouthfeel on the finish, including mineral, cinnamon stick and nutmeg.
Vintage Notes
A warm summer led to an early start to harvest, followed by a stretch of lower than average temperatures in late September that slowed ripening so grapes hung longer without sugars skyrocketing, providing balance, more flavor development and concentration. A long but successful harvest!
Winemaker Notes
Crushed gently and dropped by gravity into 1.5 ton bins, cold soaked 48 to 72 hours, then inoculated with a variety of yeasts, hand punched and pressed directly to barrel where the wine finished both primary and secondary fermentations.
Vineyard Notes
Ciel du Cheval Vineyard located in the Red Mountain Appellation was the first vineyard planted on Red Mountain in 1972. Owner Jim Holmes farms the vineyard on this revered site and credits the success of Ciel du Cheval, to “dirt and climate, climate and dirt.”
